Spin Rummy takes the classic draw-and-discard formula and adds one twist: every card has two identities. Turn a card around and it becomes a different rank in a different suit.
What Is Spin Rummy?
Spin Rummy is a two-player rummy variant played with a custom 18-card deck. Each card carries two values, and only the one in the top-right corner counts. Rotating a card switches which value is live, so a 3 of Diamonds can become a 7 of Hearts.
How is Spin Rummy different from regular rummy?
- Dual-value cards: every card does double duty, so your hand is more flexible than it looks.
- A tiny deck: 18 cards in three suits, with ranks from 3 to Ace and no 2s.
- Points for melds: you score the melds you complete instead of taking penalties for leftover cards. The highest score wins.
What Do You Need to Play Spin Rummy?
You need the 18-card Spin Rummy deck, two players (or one, using the solo rules), and paper or a phone to keep score.
Where can you get a free Spin Rummy deck?
The designer offers a free print-and-play file on the official rules page. Print it on heavy card stock. A standard 52-card deck won’t work, because its cards have only one value each.
How Do the Spinning Cards Work?
Every card is printed with two rank-and-suit combinations. Hold it one way up and one value sits in the top-right corner; rotate it 180 degrees and the other value takes its place. When hands are scored, only the top-right value counts.

Each card in your hand is really a choice between two cards.
How to Play Spin Rummy: Step-by-Step Rules
The goal in each round is to hold two melds that match that round’s contract. A meld is either a set (three cards of the same rank in different suits) or a run (three cards of the same suit in sequence).
How do you set up and deal?
At the start of each round, the starting player shuffles all 18 cards and deals six to each player. The remaining six cards go face down as the stock. The starting player switches every round.
What do you do on each turn?
- Draw the top card of the stock.
- Discard one card face up. Splay the discard pile, overlapping the cards, so every card played so far stays visible.
- If your six cards now form two melds that meet this round’s contract, you may call “Rummy”.
When can you call “Rummy”?
Call it at the end of your turn. If the starting player calls Rummy, the other player gets one final turn. Then both hands are revealed and scored.
What happens when the stock runs out?
The first time the stock empties, shuffle the discard pile to form a new stock. From then on, you may take the top discard instead of drawing from the stock. If the stock empties a second time, the round ends and both hands are scored as they stand.
What Are the Four Round Contracts in Spin Rummy?
Each round asks for a different pair of melds:
| Round | Contract | Starting player |
| 1 | Any 2 melds | Player A |
| 2 | 2 runs | Player B |
| 3 | 1 run and 1 set | Player A |
| 4 | 2 sets | Player B |
Only melds that match the current contract score. A set made in round 2, for example, earns nothing.
How Does Scoring Work in Spin Rummy?
When a round ends, both players reveal their hands and score every meld that fits the contract, whoever called Rummy.
How many points is each card worth?
| Card | Points |
| 3 to 10 | Face value |
| Jack | 11 |
| Queen | 12 |
| King | 13 |
| Ace | 14 |
How do you score a run?
A run is worth the value of its lowest card. A 3-4-5 run scores 3 points; a 10-J-Q run scores 10.
How do you score a set?
A set is worth the value of any one of its cards, since they all share a rank. Three 9s score 9 points.
What does a scored round look like?
In round 3 (one run and one set), you call Rummy holding 8-9-10 of Hearts and three Jacks. The run scores 8 and the set scores 11, so you bank 19 points for the round.
Who wins the game?
Keep a running total across all four rounds. The higher score after round 4 wins. If the scores are tied, replay round 4 until someone comes out ahead.
Can You Play Spin Rummy Solo?
Yes. Deal a second hand for an imaginary opponent and set it aside; those cards are out of play. If you haven’t called Rummy after six draws, the round ends. Total your four rounds and try to beat your best score. You need at least 60 points to win.
How Do You Win More Rounds? Spin Rummy Strategy Tips
Which cards are worth holding onto?
Keep cards whose two values could both fit this round’s melds. They give you two ways to finish.
Should you aim for high or low melds?
Aim high when you can. Because a run scores its lowest card, a 9-10-J run is worth three times as much as a 3-4-5.
How can the discard pile help you read your opponent?
Splayed discards show everything your opponent has thrown away. If they keep dropping one suit, they’re probably not building a run in it.
When should you call Rummy?
As the second player, call as soon as you can, because the round ends immediately. As the starting player, your opponent gets one more turn, so low-scoring melds may be worth improving first.
Spin Rummy vs Contract Rummy vs Gin Rummy: Which Should You Play?

| Structure | 4 rounds, fixed contracts | A series of rounds, each with a contract | Hands played to a points target |

Can you draw from the discard pile?
Only after the discard pile has been shuffled into a new stock that round. Until then, you always draw from the stock.
