Teen Patti is a three-card game played with a standard 52-card deck. This page sets out the basic rules, the hand rankings from highest to lowest, the betting terms, and the points where house rules differ — because they do differ, and the version in an app may not match the one you learned at a table.
The Basics
Play is usually between three and six players, though tables of up to nine or ten are common. Each player puts a fixed starting amount, called the boot or ante, into the pot and is dealt three cards face down. Players then take turns in a clockwise order, betting or leaving the hand, until one player remains or a show is called. The player holding the best hand, or the last player left, takes the pot.
Hand Rankings, Highest to Lowest
| Hand | What it is |
| Trail (set) | Three cards of the same rank. Three aces is the highest; three twos is the lowest trail. |
| Pure sequence (straight flush) | Three consecutive cards of the same suit. |
| Sequence (straight) | Three consecutive cards of mixed suits. |
| Colour (flush) | Three cards of the same suit that are not in sequence. |
| Pair | Two cards of the same rank, plus one other card. |
| High card | None of the above; the highest single card decides. |
Within a category, higher ranks beat lower ones. Whether A-2-3 counts as the second-highest sequence or the lowest is a house rule: some tables rank A-K-Q above A-2-3, others the reverse. Check which convention a table or app uses before you rely on it.
Betting Terms
Blind: a player who bets without looking at their cards. A blind player generally bets the current stake or less. Seen: a player who has looked at their cards and normally has to bet at least double the blind stake. Chaal: a bet to stay in the hand. Pack: to fold and leave the hand. Show: when only two players remain, either can ask for the cards to be compared, usually by paying the chaal. Side show: in some versions a seen player may ask the previous seen player to compare cards privately; the player with the lower hand folds.
Common Variations
Muflis (lowball) reverses the order so the lowest hand wins. Joker versions make one or more cards wild. AK47 treats aces, kings, fours and sevens as wild. Rules for ties, sideshows and the A-2-3 sequence differ between versions, so read the rules a specific table states rather than assuming.
Teen Patti for Real Money
Teen Patti is a game with a large element of chance, and apps that offer it for money are covered by the same framework as other money games. India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 and the 2026 Rules (in force since 1 May 2026) apply to an online money game whether it is based on skill, chance or both, and prohibit offering or promoting such games and facilitating related fund transfers. Knowing the rules of the card game does not answer whether a particular app may lawfully operate. This page does not recommend or link to any app, and it is not legal advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cards are dealt in Teen Patti?
Three cards per player, dealt face down from a standard 52-card deck.
What is the highest hand in Teen Patti?
A trail, meaning three cards of the same rank. Three aces is the highest trail.
What is the difference between blind and seen?
A blind player has not looked at their cards and bets less; a seen player has looked and normally bets at least double the blind stake.
Does A-2-3 beat A-K-Q?
It depends on the house rule. Some tables rank A-2-3 as the second-highest sequence, others rank it lowest. Confirm the convention before you play.
Is Teen Patti a game of skill?
Skill in reading opponents and managing bets matters, but the deal is random and chance is a large factor. For money games, the 2025 Act applies whether a game is based on skill, chance or both.
